Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage (EIMD)
Exercise-induced Muscle Damage (EIMD) is the description of muscle damage caused by intense exercise; usually eccentric (lengthening under tension) that players are unaccustomed to. The symptoms and indicators of damage are outlined in figure 1.
The effects of some responses can last up to 12 days in extreme cases. The most common indicator of EIMD is something that almost anybody who has performed intense exercise has felt at some point! This is known as delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and usually increases up to a peak around 48 hours, before subsiding within 72-96 hours. This are of the website aims to explain the mechanisms behind EIMD, the responses and effects on athletic performance, and provide practical training recommendations to optimise performance. |
DOMS was first reported in academic literature byTheodore Hough in 1902. |
